Artist Review: Joseph Clement Coll

Joseph Clement Coll was an American illustrator active at the beginning of the 20th century. Joe is one of those artists so monstrously impressive in his technique that any effort I make toward dynamic pen work seems comparatively futile. His drawings are so effectively and decisively overworked that I almost always end up more or less scribbling all over my own drawings hoping that adding more lines will eventually make my work look like his.

Here are some of Coll's illustrations for The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, serialized in Associated Sunday Magazine over several months in 1912. The drawings look very different when they are seen without the intended blocks of accompanying text. They take on an a more abstracted sense of space, which, when paired with the out of context drawings of cavemen and dinosaurs, makes for some weird stuff.

I was going to comment on your personal statements, but I don't see them... am I just stupid and can't find them?
